It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.

"The Movers & Shakers index identifies, by category, the biggest gainers in sales rank at Amazon.com in the past 24 hours. For example, suppose a music item has a sales rank of 10 today, but was ranked as low as 30 yesterday. Its Movers & Shakers increase would be 200 percent."
Meaning that since the PS3 was #33 24 hours ago, and is now #1, it had a 3200% increase. It has nothing to do with actual sales, but position on their ranking. A little late for the N64, but who knows? :)
Joking aside, I think this is more of a case of Amazon changing their prices before retail. At my local Wal Mart yesterday, they still have not been told about the price decrease coming and I believe that most retail chains will have it at the higher price until later this week. Therefore, some impatient PS3 fans are going online and getting it a few days before the retail prices drop everywhere else.
Without seeing actual numbers (and not just rankings and percentages), we really have no idea of how significant Amazon sales are...whether they're in the thousands, hundreds or less.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids
