According to Game Informer magazine, a $399 40gig PS3 system is on the way, but it will have no backwards compatibility. They actually expected to hear the announcement on it at E3. So they may have just heard different rumblings altogether.

From what I understand, is that the original PS3 has the PS2s emotion engine chip in it, for backwards compatibility . The new PS3s coming to the US are going to have software to do the backwards compatibility, saving the cost of the chip. This saves money but lowers the b/w comp. rate. This PS3 is already being sold in other countries. The UK has it I think. But who knows, I may be wrong, anything could happen.[ Elite ] [ Level 22 ] [ Rank: 11 ]bids

According to Joystiq, when they asked Game Informer regarding the issue, they confirmed that this rumor is just a rumor. According to Game Informer:
