"Looking to put the naysayers to rest, Sony sends word today that since the PS3's price cut on July 9, the console has received a 135 percent sales uptick at the company's top five retail partners in the US, based on its own preliminary data. Additionally, Sony's entire PlayStation hardware lineup has seen a 161 percent spike, software is up 15 percent, and accessories have risen 60 percent since the announcement two weeks ago."

This isn't a "harp on VG Chartz" post, I use them too. I was just wondering if anyone had seen this quote from their site:
“American Weekly Data” is VG Chartz estimations for sales of the United States and Canada, plus slightly more for developing markets in Central & South America. Canadian data tends to account for 5-10% of USA hardware and software sales in any given week.
I don't know if that's enough to skew people's perception of what this future, I just found it interesting. Are people taking into account an extra 5-10% skew when using VG Chartz numbers for futures data? Just wondering...[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 351 ]bids

So it had an increase of 134%, then a drop of 13%. Of course, focusing on percentages gives them a great result because their overall numbers were (and are) still quite low. 2 weeks after the price drop, they're selling 23000 more units (I'd expect that number to drop further), which isn't insignificant. During this same time, 360 sales have dropped 2000 units per week. However, Wii sales have increased 7000 units each week. While a $100 price drop on the PS3 has caused them to move over 52000 additional units, the Wii moved 22000 more units just by increasing production. As more factories switch to Wii production, I expect that number to continue to steadily rise.
The price cut is definitely working for Sony. The problem is that it can only possibly work for a limited time. Estimates put the number of unsold shipped PS3s at about 2 million. What happens to PS3 sales once the 60gb systems are sold at the lower price? Perhaps Sony is hoping to cut the price on the new 80gb SKU just after the holidays.
Overall, the surge in PS3 sales is bad news for the 360, but completely irrelevent to the Wii. There are a ton of great games coming out for all three systems as the holiday season kicks off in August...it'll be interesting to see what happens to those numbers![ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

Again, check the community page, people periodically post stocks they think are good buys and the reasons for it.
As far as how much to buy, that all depends on how confident you are that the stock will move, the amount of risk you're comfortable with, and the amount of money you have available. You should buy stocks that you think are undervalued, and you should Short Stocks that you think are overvalued.

You're absolutely correct. I have a PS3 and let me tell you, even if the Wii ends up a fad, I still believe that it will sell more units than either the PS3 or 360. Why wouldn't it? It's cheap and parents love that. Personally I can get all the games I want on a PS3 and on my PC (except Zelda). I still understand that for most (casual) gamers, the Wii is all they need. To each his own.
I was actually really into the idea of the Wii back when it was the Revolution. The Virtual Console especially sounded awesome until they announced both the price points and Square publicly has stated that they won't do downloads because they don't feel that Japan is ready for it. We will see though, I'll probably end up getting one someday in it's life cycle. I mean come on, how cheap will it be towards the end of this generation.[ Veteran ] [ Level 19 ] [ Rank: 471 ]bids

I guess they've gotta spin good news as much as they can whenever they get it. If you really think about it though, numbers can be made to say almost anything.... For the sake of illustrating this point, had Sony sold 1 PS3 machine last month and sold 10 machines this month, they could say sales were up 1000%!... but they still only sold 10 machines. What worries me more is that they even try to include Central & South American sales, which must be just wild guesses. I almost feel like they just claim that as a way to pad their errors.
However, given the substantial portion of Canadian sales, people should note if they are posting the estimated sales for America vs US (if they already took off 5-10% on their own). I think I would prefer people to just post the America number and disclose the America vs US difference. Either way, I forsee this causing confusion for some people in the future.
