The PSP is becoming one of the hottest gifts this holiday season. And for good reason too. The slimmer, lighter and generally more awesome PSP-2000 system has reignited sales of Sony's portable, and supposedly they're becoming quite hard to find in stores. In fact, PSP systems are currently outselling DS systems on amazon.com. Various CAG members report:

If you looked at the page itself, you'd see that their story is based entirely on the comments people made at "cheapassgamer.com". So they basically just copied messages from a bulletin board...people can decide how reliable that is.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

RE: Overwhelming demand causes widespread PSP shortages@apujanata, I would believe that a website with the URL of www.pspfanboy.com would be biased just by the URL address, but they also market themselves purposely as being biased because on their website they proudly proclaim "Yes, we're fanboys and girls, so what?" The only things I would take as non-biased on the site would be any hard facts like "the PSP sold <blank> many units", but thats it. Though if they say that a game is not good, then I would take that as true because a game has to bad if even fanboys do not like it.
On a side note: I thought it was funny when I went to the site to see how biased they were, there was an ad prominently on the homepage promting Brain Age 2 for the DS.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

I just noticed that the source is www.pspfanboy.com. Just the URL name itself give me shivers (fanboy in general is quite frightening). Anyone familiar with the site ? I wouldn't be too surprised if it's not piracy but lower attach rates similar to the Wii. I'm not a PSP owner but as one looking truth be told i can only think of a handful of games I'd be interested in: Daxter, LocoRoco & GoW: Chains of Olympus. It used to be Silent Hill origins but like Joe80 was pointing out that's off my list because it's going PS2, and in a recent interview developers of GoW clearly stated it could work as a ps2. Similarly I used to consider Liberty/Vice City Stories but that went ps2 too, and though I never got around to those games yet I know they're there.
Often when piracy is blamed for sales my thoughts are on the lines of: I suspect most piracy happens in places where the sales wouldn't have been as big anyway, and also I think sometimes it's part of the whole ecosystem bringing customers in, with the example behind my reasoning being Windows: I'm pretty sure MS could enforce that any internet computer with pirated windows stop working, but then a lot more people would be thinking of Linux type solutions and the people pirating Windows in homes will of course become Windows customers when they start companies because the're not going to throw themselves into unfamiliar territory. This example doesn't work so well because there's no free games unlike OSs... but still i suspect there's a bit of believable hinting in it. I look at all the people watching TV for free (resulting in mainstream of the medium?) and the relatively high prices in the games industry and I'm suspecting that it's a cry of a problem waiting to be fixed.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 444 ]bids

Pirating on DS is not as easy as on PSP, since you need to buy devices, on top of memory card.
However, the complexity on DS is much less compared to PSP's.
Since size of the PSP game is usually much bigger than DS game, the distribution / download of pirated PSP game need bigger bandwidth (compared to DS).
I noticed that a lot of people in HK and Singapore has pirated PSP and DS game, even though the anti-piracy movement in those countries are quite extensive (in the year 2007). Another problem with PSP SW sales is that they later release many of the games onto PS2, effectively cutting off a % of further PSP sales for such titles. The TV out inclusion on PSP will probably minimally affect that back in the opposite direction as people may think PSP can do portable & home play.[ Oracle ] [ Level 26 ] [ Rank: 241 ]bids

I was one of the people quoted, and I can completely back up my claim that the PSP was sold out everywhere. Also I believe PSPFanboy is under the same hood as Joystiq since their sites are integrated.
