Well, there go our dreams for a PokéMMO; Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that Nintendo has no interest in developing an MMO at this time, putting to rest the rumor of a massively multiplayer version of Animal Crossing, as well as any hope for Nintendo further broadening their online offerings.
Specifically, Iwata stated that Nintendo would only pursue MMO development if the title could appeal to people of all ages, from "5 to 95."

RE: Nintendo says no to MMOs@Laoldar,You wouldn't need a hardrive, most of the data could be stored on a server that you log onto. I think nintedo's fear of doing something non-family friendly is limiting them. There are always going to people who a paranoid about video games no matter what, and letting that ruin your online fucntionality and hurting your chances at winning the videogame war, amd more importantly for gamers taking potential away from the games.[ Oracle ] [ Level 19 ] [ Rank: 463 ]bids

It's really not that surprising. Nintendo has shown a lot of reluctance towards having a hard drive on the Wii (even though many owners want one) and having any type of MMO would require one.
Also, they have a lot of paranoia regarding online communications, and rightfully so. When PictoChat came out on the DS, a news station did a report claiming that pedophiles could use it to lure children (anyone who has used the limited service knows that's beyond impossible). Nintendo knows that they're a big target for media outlets, so they have to be very careful about what they do...even though it hurts gamers.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

As far as I know, Nintendo doesn't run servers for its Wi-Fi games now, so perhaps they do not want to start for an MMO.
I don't see how "non-family friendly" has anything to do with this. An Animal Crossing MMO would be very family-oriented.
Also, I would hesitate to say it's "hurting their chances" at anything. The DS is insanely successful and the Wii is clearly beating the 360/PS3. Even though their online service is very bare-bones, it is quite popular.
