The US census estimates there are about 111 million households in the US, so N.America would be about 122 million. That means approximately 110 million households in N.America have a DVD player.
-In contrast, Blu-ray has sold 12 million players (worldwide). However, about 10 million of those are PS3s (which are not all used as Blu-Ray players). That leaves only 2 million standalone players sold.
If you're an optimist, you can see this as room for tremendous growth for Blu-Ray. If you're a pessimist, you'll say that consumers have not accepted the new format as necessary.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

I fall into the latter camp, I did see some light for the HD DVD format based on cost and less DRM although I still was not sure it had what was needed to see off the upscaled DVD and the pay per view download options.
Blu Ray has come through the victor but I seriously doubt it will succeed in anything other than driving more upscale DVD purchases and accelerating the uptake of pay per view download options.
