Another Manufacturer Says Xbox 360 Blu-ray Coming

A report from Taiwanese news source Economic Daily News says that Pegatron Technology has received an order from Microsoft to manufacture a Blu-ray equipped model of the Xbox 360. According to the report, Pegatron says that it plans to begin production on the HD version of the Xbox 360 soon, with plans to ship within the next six months, aiming for a pre-holiday release.

I would not rule out an add-on drive for the 360 though. Why not capatilize on the installed base of the 360 through an add-on that could bring in some extra profits for the 360 (of course the price of the add-on drive would have to allow for profits).[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

Agree it won't happen. MSFT wants to own the digital download space anyway, not the hardware side of a format that is going to go the way of music.(see Apple's announcement today)
Lastly I would think most people will just buy an actual blu ray player if they want one, not an add on to the 360.[ Veteran ] [ Level 23 ] [ Rank: 30 ]bids

It won't happen. A Blu-Ray drive would drive up the cost of the 360 and Microsoft is focused on the price point right now. Sony can take a hit and subsidize the price of the drive in the PS3, but MS has no reason to.
360 sales are doing fine compared to the PS3, why would they risk it by having to jack up the price by $200-500 just for a Blu-Ray drive? They would lose too much money on it and it only supports Sony's format in the end.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

Since the current games for the 360 are published on DVD discs, a Blu-Ray drive could indeed read the discs as the large majority of Blu-Ray drives are backwards compatible with DVD discs.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

Not saying this is BS but wouldn't MSFT want to announce this and not let some Taiwanese news source quote a supplier? I am sure if this was true MSFT would have a pretty strong confidentiality agreement with the supplier.
On a side note wouldn't it have to be external? Could blu ray even read the current games out? WOuldn't they have to come out with blu ray games and regular games? No way they would do that, but I am not an expert on the tech side.[ Veteran ] [ Level 23 ] [ Rank: 30 ]bids
