According to EGM's Quartermann's column, Microsoft is set to announce that it will be licensing the core Xbox 360 tech to other companies. Meaning that they can then build their own 360 consoles, or other home electronics (TVs, Blu-ray Disc players) with "360 inside." If true, this wouldn't be the first time console makers have allowed other companies access to their technology.

I think it's more likely to lose that trust with the RRoD. RRoD didn't happen because Microsoft made it, it happens because the console runs way too hot.

I wonder if Microsoft will insist that the clones use the same XBOX 360 shell as they do. Panasonic didn't and it confused consumers to no end. The Elite model is still available, but just most people see it as overpriced for the extras you get over the Pro model - which it kind of is. I would suspect that the Elite will continue to be available because it probably has a higher profit margin than the other models because of the lesser value for the money for the consumer.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

You didn't mention Elite ? Does it mean that it was no longer available (I am asking since I don't really follow up those models) ? Don't forget about Halo unit (I am not sure whether it is only green skin, or if there is some subtle difference between it and Elite).
PS3, AFAIK, that have backward compatibility is no longer available as stand alone purchase (only as part of bundle).
Personally, I find both PS3 and X360 choice as confusing, especially for common people. You might not find it confusing, since you follow the up them closely. Even though I play lots of game, I am slightly confused with those choices. I prefer something simple, like PS2, XBOX, NDS and Wii. All I have to do for them is choose the color I like. I prefer one single SKU, and plethora of peripheral. It also made it simple at the retail level (stocking simplicity). Imagine you wanted to buy a certain model, and then it was sold out at your favorite shop. Although it could mean more 360's in homes that will buy software and peripherals which is where MS makes its money. It could also go some way to putting the RRoD fiasco behind them, consumers may trust other companies more, so they become attatched to the MS brand through them. There are advantages to doing this.
And to be honest i never really saw the multiple SKU's as confusing. Either buy the Core if you only want to play normal games, or get the Pro with the hard drive if you want to use XboxLive and play online. Although im sure many consumers were confused by this, I personally find the PS3's multiple SKU's much more confusing, what with varying backwards compatibility and being region specific.[ Oracle ] [ Level 22 ] [ Rank: 150 ]bids

No the cause of the RRoD was largely that MS used cheap motherboards and over time the soldering on them would basically melt and break. Not particularly because it was too hot. The new models with the 65nm chip are cooler anyway and i believe the issue with the faulty motherboards has been largely fixed. As long as companies use the newer model design then hardware faults should return to normal levels of about 1-5%.
