Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play.

If LucasArts was smart (not that they have been acting smart lately), they would delay one of their two titles coming out this year so that way they can bring out the first 1:1 sword/lightsaber game. It would be perfect for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

I don't think it will fracture the installed base really much at all or the development community.
We will have to wait until tomorrow for me details from Nintendo on the Wii Motion Plus, but from history, Nintendo usually has some sort of game title to go along with a new piece of hardware like this. And by the press release, it appears as they are targeting mostly those who want/need 1:1 response while playing/while developing a game.
I believe they may be aiming more for the hardcore crowd with this peripheral rather than the casual crowd.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

I changed my stance after reading this :
"The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote" and after seeing the pictures. I thought that it is another Wii-mote type of controller. Since it is just an attachment, I don't think it had a big negative impact towards existing userbase and developer community (just like having Wii Wheel and Zapper are not big negative impact).
I still think that Microsoft or Sony will copy this kind of innovation.[ Oracle ] [ Level 23 ] [ Rank: 9 ]bids

I think this is an option, for those certain game that needs 1:1. I don't see myself buying this accessory.

Asked whether or not the MotionPlus technology was open to third-party developers yet, Miyamoto said, no, not yet. "We've only just announced it today, and because of that I'm sure we'll start getting many inquires. But the libraries will be in a state that we believe we can pass off to third-parties very soon," he added.
So not quite as much time as you were estimating, but there were some other interesting comments that Miyamoto added.
"There's a lot of potential things we can look at with that," Miyamoto said of MotionPlus. "We haven't finalized anything at this point, but my general assumption is that probably having the Wii MotionPlus coupled with the Wii remote is going to become a much better standard for us to work with."
So, it may seem that the Wii-mote and MotionPlus together may be on its way to becoming a standard. If so, then developer/software support "will be huge."
