Acclaim boss David Perry has said that Sony will not be able to make a decent profit on sales of the PlayStation 3 due to selling the system at a loss.

I have no doubt that Sony will profit off of all combined PS3 sales (software & accessories). How about licensing royalty from third party ? IF (a big IF) PS3 managed to get good to great third party sales, wouldn't it help SCE get profit ?
From pure H/W perspective, PS3 might be losing money. But from a total (combined H/W & S/W), IMO, there is no guarantee that SCE will not make profit on PS3.[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

I doubt that Sony will ever recoup the hardware cost through hardware sales alone although I am sure in future years once the development costs have been written off this will form a distant memory.
Nintendo and Microsoft may now have time to work in the next replacement again leaving the PS4 in the wake, how brand loyalty will progress once the PS3 owners are once again waiting is anybodies guess but I suspect like the PS2 they will have more than enough to be getting on with.
