Sony believes that "the best [software] line-up of any PlayStation generation" will help the PS3 remain competitive this Christmas, despite the console carrying what's increasingly looking like a heavy price tag around its neck.

I am not sure Sony are in the position to change. I am sure they realise the need to lower the price to prevent undoing the hard work but they already have a large R+D cost to recoup and continuing to lose even greater amounts off money by selling even larger numbers of PS3s might not be justifiable.
The problem the PS3 has is the 360 has the extra year in manufacture and cheaper components, that is always going to be a tough cookie to follow. The Wii is the only system that can challenge the price of the Xbox but it does not need to.
