Nintendo is packaging a unique code with each WiiSpeak peripheral that will allow users to download the WiiSpeak Channel for use, but also screws anyone who wishes to purchase it secondhand. The code is only good for one use and will be the only way to download the service that works with the peripheral.
This is the latest incidence of publishers striking back at used game sales, which is an epidemic crushing profits and putting the entire industry at a near standstill.

I wouldn't categorize this as worrying sign, except for gamestop, or if you are the type of gamer that buy something, finish it, and trade it in to buy another new game.
Myself, I am collector type gamer. I bought new game (sometimes a used copy, when the price is significantly lower, not when the used price is only 10% lower than new price). I didn't usually sell my old game, except in certain special cases (like helping a friend who couldn't find a copy of Phoenix Wright 1, so I sell it to him and get Wii Classic Controller in return).
This (assault on pre-owned sales) in theory should increase games sales, but in reality, it could backfire, because people would rather rent (in US) than buying a new game, since they couldn't recover part of their expense toward the next game.
I believe that the game that will be mostly affected by this is the once played then shelved type of game (like RPG), or games that doesn't have good, continuous online multiplayer part. Games like COD, Halo, Mario Kart, SSBM, LBP, shouldn't be negatively affected by this.
Can GoW2's extra map packs available as DLC at additional investment ? If yes, then the impact is less than Wii Speak's (assuming that Nintendo didn't make that channel available for download using Nintendo Points in the future).[ Oracle ] [ Level 30 ] [ Rank: 14935 ]bids

This is a worrying sign, what with Epic including a code to download extra map packs in new copies of GoW2 to deter people from buying it pre-owned as they wont get the map packs if they do. No the map pack is only available using the code, it isnt available as seperate DLC, not at this point anyway and for the significant future i would imagine.
I also rarely sell my games, not because i want to collect them, just that by the time i come to sell the price is too low and i dont see the point. I would rather keep a game so that i can come to play it again rather than get like £10 for it, and then they sell it at £25. I think that if they introduce any real measures (and if anyone is to do it my bets on Epic first) then it will have a negative impact on sales as alot of people like knowing that when they spend £40 / $60, if they dont like it they can still get 2/3 of the price back so they will turn to rentals instead.
