The selection of movies that one can stream from Netflix to the Xbox 360 just got a bit smaller, as a batch of content distributed by Columbia Pictures — owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment (dun dun dunnnnn!) — is now listed as "currently unavailable for playback on the Xbox." That affects some big releases from the studio, including titles like Superbad, The Karate Kid and The Lives of Others

Here is Sony's official statement.
MTV Multiplayer has now heard from Sony Pictures themselves, who have tried to squash rumors this was a secret power play.
"This issue is not specific to Xbox or any other individual platform," said a Sony Pictures spokesperson in an e-mailed statement. "Sony Pictures is currently in discussions with the relevant parties to resolve certain licensing matters related to the distribution of its motion pictures. Given the ongoing nature of these discussions, we don't think it is appropriate to comment further at this time."
Sony Pictures' statement suggests this remains a licensing issue, and it's likely streaming will return to Xbox 360 sometime in the future.

Netflix controls how the media is streamed and is device aware.
This will not look good for Sony. This will be seen as restricting competition by most folks and Netflix would appear to be caught in the middle of it.
If we take this at face value then it would appear that Sony are seriously concerned about the uptake of digital distribution outside of its control. It could impact Blu Ray and the PS3 if this service becomes a major selling point.
Personally I think this will be resolved shortly but at what cost. Hopefully it will be resolved more amicable than the spat between Virgin and Sky in the UK when Virgin refused to pay the inflated prices and pull the channels from its service.
