"Recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days," wrote Hickey. Hickey sees PS3s languishing on shelves and losing publisher support and developer support if Sony does not make a move by April or June at the latest. He also comes out with this whopper: "We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."

BD-less PS3 won't happen just like a BD 360 won't happen. The drives work in fundamentally different ways at a technical level meaning no existing games would work and publishers would have to do significant work to get any new ones to, not to mention release even more SKU's.
I wish some of these analysts would use their brains or ask someone who knows about this stuff before gobbing off. It does a dis-service to investors quite frankly.

I mean I could see a BD fitted Xbox in the premium model but only for movies and not for games. This sounds like the most whacked out rumour I have heard in a long time.

Technically it is possible they would simple have to alter the way content was delivered and lose the HD movie playback capability. Obviously from a Technical standpoint only a Blu Ray drive is going to play Blu Ray content. It is exactly for these reasons why this cannot happen and why this is not realistic.
A Blu Ray drive on the 360 is realistic even if it is unlikely. No technical reason why a Blu Ray capable drive could not also playback DVD9 discs. I think the flagship system will also maintain its price point and for that reason will always contain premium components which I still think will eventually mean a Blu Ray combi drive and WiFi and all the other missing components.
