My personal experience is with Wal Mart (Canada). With DVDs, they get a ton of copies of a new release and anything that doesn't sell within the new release window is sent back. However, for games they seem to just sit around. I haven't personally seen any sent back to the publishers (aside from San Andreas during Hot Coffee). Last year I actually saw a Gameboy Color game there.
Remember, retailers take all the risk for nearly everything they carry....picture frames, lamps, clothing, bedding, TVs, etc. Why would games be that different from the majority of products at a retail store?
