It could also be viewed by other people as allowing for another option for digital downloads instead of a dedicated box. Microsoft seems intent on bringing more movies and TV shows to Xbox Live Marketplace and that is the way (for now) that Microsoft will provide user experience - remember that the 360 is first and foremost a gaming device and secondly a media device.
Remember that a good number of people believed that Microsoft supported HD-DVD to make sure the format war continued on for a bit to allow for them to make progress in the digital download arena.
