The problem with reviews and MMOs is that nobody issues new review scores based on patched and improved versions. Star Wars Galaxies was very poor at launch but over the next year its development became a totally different game. Reviewers didn't come in to replace the originally very poor scores.
However, in terms of long legs, I think word of mouth is more important. In the case of MMOs, word of mouth is far more important as people join to play with their friends.
