Firstly, I think this is 1 million shipped, not sold.
According to the article, NPD says the game sold 412,000 from release to 31st July in the US. This is interesting because we can use it to work out how much the game sold in July - we know it sold 372k in June as it made the NPD top 10 for that month. So, the game sold 40k in July, and I doubt it sold more than that in August, so the game is probably at <500k in the US.
Now, the 40% of sales in the US figure. I don't buy that at all. I don't know if it comes directly from MS, or if the Gamespot reporter has just taken the 1 million shipped number and NPD's 412k sold number, and come up with 40% sold in the US; most likely it's the latter. If that's the case, the stat is useless. (If anyone has access to MS's official press release, maybe they could clarify this.)
The idea that ~50% of the game's sales have been in Europe, when the US is a much stronger market for the 360, does not seem credible to me. I was also under the impression that the NG series is more popular in the US.
Basically, my argument here is: 1) This is 1 million shipped, not sold. 2) The 40% sold in the US stat is wrong. The percentage is probably much higher. 3) Actual sales in the US are currently <500k, if NPD is correct.
At this stage I doubt the game is going to move too many more copies. I do not think this news should have caused a jump in the stock price.
