I do not think anybody doubted that they would cut prices next year and March is a good a time as any. The problem is if this gets a lot of publicity and it appears that way at the moment it could harm sales (I doubt it will have much of an impact tbh).
Sony's problem is the continuing weak Yen, any price break they have will almost certainly have to factor this in and I think the biggest danger is the price cut in March (assuming) may not be substantial enough.
Also with Microsoft playing hardball they could rain on Sony's parade.
