Been on top of worldwide PC game sales since march. Numbers are not announced yet, as it is only preorder and no shippped units yet.
In March, Wii console was sold in 700k units in the US alone. The normal Age of Conan box are selling about the same as Wii console there.
GTAIV sold 6 mill units the first week, must be with preorders. A couple of weeks before launch of GTAIV, The Age of Conan Collector's edition was selling more than GTAIV there.
Even without numbers disclosed yet, I believe we will get millions of copies sold of this game, before the first week after launch is over.
On play.com, one of UK's biggest gamingsites this game is listed as nr 29 on the all time top 100 list http://www.play.com/Games/PC/6-/Top100.html The game at spot nr 30 is Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (Expansion Pack), wich accordingly to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#PC sold 1 million copies worldwide. And there's still 2 weeks till release of AoC.
Fileplanet now gives beta accounts to all registered users, even those who don't have a premium account. You can get a key at http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/ageofconan/beta/ . Keys are limited and will be released on a first-come, first-served basis.
Mass Effect wasn't unique at all...you can get the same scene in games like The Movies, or even The Sims.
Media scare mongering over video games doesn't rely on facts or reality. The fact that it's a persistent online character might make it easier to make the case that you're doing it to a person.
how is dismembering, decapitations, blood spattering and fatality moves other actual human players something you dont see often? ive done it over 20,000 times on Gears of War ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. dismembering - you completely destroy the body into mush with a shotgun/torque bow/boomshot, decapitations - shotgun/sniper/pistol headshots mean exploding head and body slumps to floor, blood spattering on screen - when on host / chainsawing you get blood all over the screen, fatality moves - curbstomping someones head into the ground, i think that covers it. did you see that have any negative media attention? No. it is also included in various other online games as well.
Mass Effect had a lesbian kiss which as before unseen was a big taboo. violence and breasts have already been covered in dozens of games, GTA for example so its not exactly breaking new ground.
Even if it does get media attention as ive already stated in the post you downbid, it doesnt neccesarily lead to improved sales. i really dont see why you downbid my post as every single point in it was accurate.
"i have seen nothing to lead me to believe that this game will be ultra violent, no more so than the dozens of other games released every month that garner no media attention."
I disagree, while decapitations and dismemberments, blood spattering on the screen and "fatality" moves are nothing new, the fact that you're doing this to actual human players rather than NPCs is something you don't see often. I'm sure somebody will get up in arms about that, unless of course the politicians and soccer moms don't even notice the gratuitous violence after hearing that you can observe unclothed human breasts. Just look at what happened with Mass Effect. If the right person gets wind of this one, who knows what could happen. I'd venture to say that AoC actually might contain a lot of the things that Mass Effect was wrongly accused of containing.
Coming from, well, from somebody who's not Rockstar, who knows how much attention this will actually garner in the mainstream media. The recipe is definitely there for a lot of controversy though.
just because you disagree with a comment or someones point of view does not mean you should downbid them. especially if their point has merit and especially not every single one on the page. doing so will not do you any favours around here. save them for offensive/pointless posts or repeated articles. based on the fact that you already have more total downbids than me (47) and only 53 upbids, maybe you just dont get how the system works yet, but i suggest you learn quickly before you annoy even more people.
and i downbid your post not out of spite (although id say it was fairly just) but because i think it has absolutely zero merit. i have seen nothing to lead me to believe that this game will be ultra violent, no more so than the dozens of other games released every month that garner no media attention. I also dont believe that negative media attention drives sales that much, just look at Manhunt 2 and the huge media/ banning debacle surrounding it, yet its been a complete flop. i highly doubt the hot coffee incident made even a 1% increase in the total sales of San andreas as it sold it such high volumes anyway and it was only a mod that was hard to access.
I think you will see this game get huge amounts of media attention as it approaches release due to the high level of graphic violence and the high profile of Conan and the Conan movies. Don't be surprised if you see Arno himself on CNN during the media storm that is brewing.
As was seen with the GTA "hot coffee" mod episode the media attention will only drive demand and sales for the game.
Thanks for updating the wiki summary for this stock page. I will try to find whether they have announced pricing (which from small bit of research, seems to indicate they have not).
I agree with what everybody's saying in that this is greatly overvalued. I wonder though, how much impact Warhammer: Age of Reckoning being delayed until fall will have on this title? Without having to choose between the two for a few months maybe a lot more people will be purchasing this?
