Looks like L4D might not be going to the PS3 after all. Maybe a year or two down the road.
Speaking to us at a Microsoft event, Chet Faliszek of Valve said when asked "Many people say that they heard rumours that Left4Dead is coming to PS3, however despite telling them this isn't true they still don't believe us, what more can we say than it is not"".
Valve told Edge on Thursday it will be spending $10 million (£5.9m) on a consumer campaign that will incorporate television, online, print and outdoor advertising across the country. "Our pre-orders are running 60 %t ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense."
Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of Marketing, has told IGN that the upcoming Left 4 Dead demo will take place "from the front of the Survivor's first campaign (including the opening movie)." This area of the demo will encompass a hospital level, and an area "outside the Hospital."
"The main part of the game has you play as one of four survivors who are immune to the virus that has turned most of the population into a variety of mutant zombies.
Left 4 Dead was coming out on November 4. Was! Not is. Because it's had a slight change. In an interview with Gamekings, Valve's Gabe Newell has announced that the game will now be out on November 20.
It looks like the continued success of the PS3 has the studio taking back some of his words. "We're always evaluating what's happening in the marketplace and certainly something that's happening in the last couple of months is that Sony's managed to sell some boxes," said Doug Lombardi to CVG. "So whether or not you like developing for that platform, if they've got millions of people connected to that platform and buying their games you have to take it seriously."
"While Team Fortress 2 on the PC stands as one of the most well-supported PC games released in quite some time, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions haven't been supported quite as well. Tight restrictions with regard to patching games and distributing content have made it hard for Valve, and apparently, that may affect downloadable content for the company's upcoming title Left 4 Dead. "
Rumors have been swirling on the internet that Valve's eagerly awaited zombie shooter Left 4 Dead for the Xbox 360 and PC would also be hitting the PLAYSTATION 3. Seems those rumors have been smashed pretty hard for the time being by Valve's Doug Lombardi, who states: There is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead currently in production.
@Kentor, If anything is wondering what the original concept art looks like versus the new direction, there's a batch of character sketches in the article.
