Late last week, the crew at Ensemble left us a present and we didn't even notice it. The company unlocked every unit and structure in both the UNSC and Covenant field manuals for Halo Wars. If you're hankerin' for some Halo Wars, you might want to browse through each field manual. After all, the game is only a few months away, so you might as well start planning your strategies now.

Visually this game is looking rather different to other RTS. The camera appears to be able to view the horizon, and the army pathfinding and flocking navigation AI looks suberb. They aren't just standing there in sterile rank and file, but pushing towards the enemy.

Microsoft Game Studios and Ensemble Studios are on course to ship their strategy take on the Halo universe this February, and they're readying one hell of a Limited Collector's Edition for those willing to drop a little extra coin. $79.99 gets you the game, six leader cards, a Spirit of Fire patch, a Halo Wars: Genesis graphic novel, and the Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack, which comes with “Assembly,” “Orbital” and “Sandbox”.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that they'd be shuttering renowned developer Ensemble Studios, as soon as they're done developing Halo Wars. As one of the world's premier PC and strategy developers, this was sad, sad news. An Xbox LIVE technical issue wiped all Halo Wars Xbox LIVE Leaderboards earlier today. This includes all singleplayer, multiplayer and Trueskill leaderboards, as well as all matchmaking data. At this time it’s unknown if the data can be restored, resulting in the Halo Wars Leaderboards being reset to original Launch Day status. The Xbox LIVE team is investigating the cause, and they will provide an update to the situation as soon as possible.

After my brief time with the Halo Wars campaign, I came away impressed with the controls – easy to use but deep enough to allow truly tactical thinking. And the larger-than-life Halo storytelling is here, too. From what I've seen so far, Halo fans will be quickly drawn into the prequel story, which includes strong characters, cool new vehicles and even a Cortana-like AI named Serina (fanboys, register your domain names now).

Halo Wars will never make the journey from console to PC, according to the game's lead developer. We spoke to Ensemble's Graeme Devine at a Microsoft press event last week, and enquired about the possibility of a port in the near future: "Zero. Never. I'm going to go on the record and say never ever! Microsoft may go and announce it, but I'll say never."
