Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, the two biggest mascots in video game history will square off on the Nintendo Wii, but not in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (at least not yet). Instead of beating each other up, the two will compete in Sega's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Due out this November, just in time for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the game pits the archrivals against each other in a series of events, the goal to capture the elusive gold medal.

Speaking with SEGA of America president Simon Jeffery earlier this week, he was pretty excited about how well Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has been selling. Worldwide SEGA has sold about 10 million copies and, as Jeffery pointed out, the upcoming Olympics will likely provide a boost to sales of the game when they kick off.

‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ stages a Herculean comeback, jumping back into the All Formats Top 40 at No1 with renewed stock handing Sega’s Wii title its third All Formats gold medal. It is the third different title to reach No1 so far this year, selling more than twice as much as the next title on an individual format (Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training).

IGN Review: 7.9/10 Good!

IGN - November 6, 2007

Despite the multitude of mini-game fests that the Wii has already, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games delivers a fun and surprisingly deep multiplayer experience. "Yeah we’ve seen it all before in things like Rayman or Mario Party 8, but this mascot mash-up is more focused, refined, and classically rooted."

A mostly positive preview that talks about the different types of events that are included (such as the 100 meter dash, the Hammer Throw, and the Triple Jump). It also talks about how the game utilizes the Wii controls and what Wi-Fi features are to be included in the game.

Hands on

AMN - July 13, 2007

"The game is easy to get into...There are 20 events planned for the final game including archery, fencing, gymnastics, skeet shooting, and many, many others. The controls are simple enough for anyone to get into. Most of the games use a combination of nunchuck/Wiimote controls, though there are a few that use only the Wiimote, and the game is planned to support up to four players....The developers spoke that they are looking into the possibility of utilizing the Wii Zapper for the skeet shooting game, though they would not confirm it. There is also planned connectivity with the DS version that will release alongside this Wii version. Only 8 characters were in the demo, but 20 are planned for the final. They are also planning on having support for online Wii leaderboards featuring best times and scores........controls are waaaaaaaaay overly-simplified. A lot of the games just boil back into a glorified waggle fests, much like a next-gen Track & Field...game will not support any kind of story mode...no plans for any kind of online play"
