WoW: WOTLK Getting Achievements

Kotaku - June 9, 2008

From Kotaku: "[...]Blizzard might be giving that to them in the form of in-game achievements in the next expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. According to DeathKnight.info, players in the Wrath of the Lich King alpha can type /achievement to bring up a screen like the one above, which shows various achievements that can be performed for points, which will more than likely then go towards buying gear and such."

According to a brief item in JLC Pacific Epoch, China's General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) and the Ministry of Culture have come to an agreement about whether NetEase has been illegally operating its license for the MMORPG World of Warcraft. According to "an unnamed insider." the two sides apparently have agreed that regulations were broken, as the story says that a "punishment" will be announced in mid-January.

Activision's annual report released to the SEC yesterday mentions that Activision is worried about WoW becoming "obsolete," and that the regulatory issues in China could affect the entire company's bottom line. the fears about WoW are all in a section of the report labeled "Risk Factors," in which a company must disclose anything that could possibly go wrong with its financials in the future, just in case. In there, Activision worries about everything from credit card fraud to its ESRB ratings

Blizzard: WoW's stopped growing at 11.5m

VG247 - February 10, 2010

Submitted by deftangel (279) at 3:04PM PST on February 10, 2010

Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime just said that World of Warcraft’s subs base is static at 11.5m users, at the same level it’s been since late 2008. Yep: that means it’s not going up. Blizzard announced the MMO had hit 11.5m users in late December 2008. Morhaime noted that the Chinese market, which makes up some 50 pc of the game’s userbase, still doesn’t have access to Wrath of the King.

How WoW works in China

I'm posting this looking to provoke some more debate on our current GLS predictions for the WoW: Lich King Expansion. Out of the current 11.5m WoW subscribers, at least half originate from Asia where the business model and what constitutes an actual "sale" is not quite so clear cut. Please see the comments for the relevant info from the link.
