Advance Wars: Days of Ruins 1up Review 8.5/10

1up.com - January 18, 2008

Days of Ruin offers plenty new, but it's possible it got rid of too much of the old. But just like with our ol' buddy Jake, we're OK with trading up all those bonus modes in Dual Strike for more tactically oriented units and real online play (though it'll still take us some time to get used to this new CO gameplay). Advance Wars has finally advanced. 8.5/10

"We chat with associate localization producer Tim O'Leary about the forthcoming Advance Wars sequel." (even though the title makes it sound like they interviewed the game.)

Advance Wars: Dark Conflict

..."Well, all that fanciful nonsense has been swept aside. Dark Conflict introduces a brand-new cast and a whole new world of woe. The old cast? Probably dead. The opening credits tell of a meteor shower that’s devastated the entire world. 90% of the population is dead. Cities are shattered husks, and those who survive have taken their fashion cues from Mad Max. "...

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin Review (8.6/10.0)

IGN - January 21, 2008

"While Advance Wars: Days of Ruin has a shiny new coat of paint, the gameplay will be familiar territory to fans. The changes are thus mostly cosmetic -- this is really the same turn-based strategy game we've been playing all along. For the most part, that's a good thing. Fans of the series are getting the game they know and love. Just don't expect it to break new ground in terms of gameplay. Days of Ruin still delivers the fun, though, and strategy fans will once again have their hands full."

I spent way too much time playing Advance Wars: Day of Ruins over the weekend. The latest in the franchise, remains just as addictive as its predecessors. I was disappointed to find that the more detailed, grittier look found in the game's cut scenes vanish when you drop into play.

Next week, Nintendo will answer fans' cries for a new Advance Wars game with Days of Ruin, a grittier installment in the hallowed portable strategy series from Intelligent Systems. Yesterday we took a look at Days of Ruin's darker tone and art style, and today we're back to examine how the game will play, including the changes made to the interface and controls, new types of units, major changes to the commanding officers and their abilities, and more.

In an effort to prevent the series from falling into a rut, IS has removed a lot of the distractions and unnecessary elements that have built up on the series over the course of its lifespan. The double-screen battles that annoyed so many players in Dual Strike are gone; many advanced units have been removed or replaced, and CO powers have been considerably toned down -- we're told they're no longer capable of single-handedly changing the outcome of a battle.
