At Microsoft's GDC 2008 keynote address, Tomonobu Itagaki just announced that Ninja Gaiden 2 will be released in North America on June 3, with a worldwide release coming in early June.

Ninja Gaiden II is easily one of the best action games on Xbox 360. The depth in combat is as exciting as ever and the new gameplay additions and changes only add to the experience...It looks great in motion and it feels great to know you're the one at the helm, directing this bloody dance. It has its foibles and doesn't feel as rich as the last Ninja Gaiden, but this sequel still offers up a great ride.

Ninja Gaiden 2 will be released in Europe on 6th June. Retailer GAME provided the date on its website, and inside sources have confirmed to Eurogamer that it is accurate. Developer boss Tomonobu Itagaki had previously told us that Ninja Gaiden 2 would be out on 3rd June in the US, and everywhere else sometime that month. Those of you in the US will also be treated to a demo in May, as well as exclusive content on 15th April, according to the game's website.

The next release, curiously titled Ninja Gaiden II—despite its many variations since 1988. In fact, it’s being billed as an 360 exclusive, with Tecmo’s Team Ninja developing it, while Microsoft takes up the publishing duties. You have to figure that, for Microsoft to get behind the game in such a direct way, the company is expecting big things from this new sequel.

When sites reviewing Ninja Gaiden 2 encountered serious framerate issues, most assumed that this was just a problem with the review build which would be fixed for the release (as with some previous games). In fact, CVG staff confirmed on their forums that "[they] reviewed off PAL, boxed retail copy. Slowdown very much still there."

A Ninja Gaiden 2 demo will becoming to the Xbox Live Marketplace in May, with some other exclusive content coming April 15th. The demo precedes this highly anticipated game's release on June 3rd.

As Microsoft is set to announce at a pre-Tokyo Game Show press event shortly, Ninja Gaiden 2 is real, heading to Xbox 360, and -- in an unusual twist -- being published by Microsoft itself, rather than Tecmo. While still under development by Tecmo's Team Ninja, the publisher shift puts it next to games like Halo 3 and Mass Effect as part of Microsoft's first-party lineup.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is a spectacle. Its predecessor has come to be remembered for a steep but perfectly pitched difficulty curve - but firing up NG2 for the first time is a reminder of just how cinematic and exciting the whole thing is, too.
