Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. Chairman Strauss Zelnick, head of a new management team, said on Monday he prefers to run the publisher of the hit Grand Theft Auto video game series rather than sell it.
"I'm much more interested in growing the business than in selling it, to be clear," Zelnick told the Reuters Media Summit. "I would say for the next five to seven years this is a terrific time to be in the video game business."

but should they get succes with gta4 won't that lead to exactly the oposite of you wanted: encouraging them to invest less in new IPs and more in big name series?
Personally I hope the industry is as ready as PR said for Assassin's for new IPs... and to pleasant surprise I see a surprising number of big investment new IPs on the horison... so that's exciting... but unfortunatelly still doesn't seem to change the fact that we (justly?) expect big sales for old IPs with a number at the tail. Wondering/hoping if things will ever change and people will get games from the same trusted studios even if they don't have the brand name attached to them (gta, final fantasy, need for speed...) though unfortunatelly I wouldn't bet on it. Haven't played it so i don't know if I can back it, but maybe Mass effect deserves sales in numbers like a final fantasy, being in the same genre, ... but chances are it'll only get there when it reaches Mass effect 3 :(
There is one way I do hope the industry might grow out of this: I see more big name developers who are tired of being forced to make the same games again and they rebel. Publishers could capitalize on this tendency by taking their creations and turning them into sequels made by other companies, sure they'll suck, but the publishers will be happy with the sales, in the meanwhile the developers will be happy making new things and the customers might learn to pick titles based on content not name... though again, kinda of a slim chance I suspect.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 444 ]bids

It's refereshing to see a company looking to new IPs (such as Bioshock) rather than trying to make a quick buck off of licensed properties.

I'm curious about the media response and citing of this promise should it prove to be more like the recent reception, less than the high expectations, nevermind vastly better. Should be interesting if a couple of months of extra development help GTA4 completely crush the first impressions of reviewers which I understand were dissapointing. Since they've used profits from the GTA3 series to fund new IPs, I think that success for GTA4 would lead to more new IPs from Take-Two.
