Valve® today announced that Steam®, a leading platform for PC games and digital entertainment, has surpassed 15 million accounts and realized year-over-year sales growth of 158% through the holiday season. The year also marked the debut of the Steam Community and launch of several best-selling and critically-acclaimed titles such as Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, and The Orange Box.

This highlights a fact that I have been stating in a multitude of comments: NPD numbers may seem low for PC titles because of the fact that digital distribution of PC titles is quickly growing and the NPD does not get sales numbers from digital distributors.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 294 ]bids

Couldn't agree more. Especially from a well established service like Steam. When Portal is released at retail that's likely to be a very difficult one to judge as that's a title ideal for digital distribution.
It happened with music charts, NPD will have to account for it at some point.
