Sony is slashing 8,000 jobs, or 4 % of its global work force, as a global downturn and stronger yen batters profits at the Japanese electronics maker.
Sony Corp. , which has 185,000 employees worldwide, said Tuesday it will complete the layoffs by the end of March, 2010. They will come from its electronics business, which has 160,000 workers.

I recently read a Fortune article about job slashing at other companies. The figure is astounding, to say the least :
= 6,000 layoff at Sun Microsystems
- 3,150 layoff at Pepsi Bottling.
-52,000 layoff at Citigroup (one of the largest job cuts on record)
- 197,000 jobs vaporized in US financial sector in 2008.
