Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it is cutting 5,000 jobs, a sign of how badly they are being stung by the recession. The layoffs appear to be a first for Microsoft, which was founded in 1975. Theyare unable to offer profit and revenue guidance for the rest of the year, because of the market volatility.

Relevant notes to trading here: "Microsoft says it shipped 6 million Xbox 360 consoles during the quarter, compared to 4.3 million in the previous year. In all, 8.3 million Xbox 360 consoles were shipped in the last six months of 2008, versus 6.1 million consoles in the year previous."
Revenue for the entertainment group was up but profit was down. Xbox 360 did its part, but Zune was a drag.
However, this part of the company is still largely irrelevant. The company missed expectations dramatically with low Windows sales. They blamed weak economic environment.
