Heavenly Sword is a new third-person action IP exclusive to the PS3. It was originally developed for the Xbox 360 but was passed by Microsoft before Sony Computer Entertainment picked it up. The player takes the role of a girl who only has a few days left to live and decides to spend her last days battling an invading army.

Heavenly Sword plays as a martial arts game with melee and ranged weapons. The action is considered cinematic. Heavenly Sword features a countering system that that lets you reverse the fight when you block an opponent’s attacks. You can rotate the camera by rotating the PS3 SIXAXIS controller. Objects in the game can be picked up and thrown at your enemies. As you lay on the damage and perform combos, a meter will fill that lets you unleash craziness on your foes by completing a minigame like in God of War.

Sequel “Extremely Unlikely”

Ripten - May 27, 2008

From Ninja Theory: "We’re not abandoning HS just on a whim because we want to go off and do something different - there’s a great huge raft of reasons behind us taking the direction we are... As for the ‘you’re just not doing HS2 NOW’ comments - well one thing you learn in this industry is that you never say ‘Never’. So I’m not going to say we’ll “never” go back and make HS2 - but it’s something I personally see as extremely unlikely."

Large Interview with Developer

"Sexy Redhead. Huge Sword. Next-Gen!" Your sword transforms into one of three stances by merely holding down the shoulder buttons as you attack. Speed stance is the most technical and good for countering, evading, quick combos and juggling. Power stance is great for block-breaking, blocking heavy attacks and knocking enemies into other enemies. Range stance is good for clearing out large numbers of enemies so that you can focus on the tougher ones and also for deflect arrows and sweeping objects at enemies.

IGN Review 7.0

IGN - August 24, 2007

"Heavenly Sword comes very close to being great, but nearly every element of its design falls short in one way or another. The combo system is quite good, though it has a few holes (like no specific block button). The battles quickly become very repetitive due to a lack of interesting enemies and the "arena" battles that frequently pause your progress. Kai's sniper missions work well in theory but can be overly long, and some of the extra bits like the button matching mini-games needed a bit more fine-tuning. Heavenly Sword's presentation is stellar and nicely ties the action sequences together, but we just wish that the same amount of care that went into these cutscenes were applied to the game's pacing."
