@Laoldar, Wow, recently it is rare that I agree with Laoldar, nothing wrong with us disagreeing we are entitled to our opinions. But I do believe consoles can drive, or more appropriately, affect format sales. PS2 definitely drove DVD sales, and no matter what anyone says PS3 has helped Bluray. Although at this point PS3 has to do more before Bluray will continue to outperform HDDVD. I wouldn't bring UMD into this because the only device it ever got to live on is the PSP, which is doing pretty well against Nintendo who has long dominated portable sales, PSP has done better than any other competitor to Nintendo in that realm. The addition of being able to view PSP video on a regular TV will likely allow UMD to live on, though probably not allow it to not die, but that is only because it is on 1 device, a portable device...
2 points to make. Sony has an uphill fight, but also remember that Sony has more internal studios at work than any other publisher, even EA, all working on PS3 games. And despite what you may read on some areas of the internet, Sony can make great 1st party games. I think they have 12 or 14 internal studios working on PS3 games. The second point is that Bluray may cost more right now, but it holds 2x as much as HDDVD, and HDDVD can't increase what it holds, but Bluray can continue to come down in price closer to HDDVD. It's only 2007 & id already has a game coming out soon that requires atleast 2 DVDs, if Bluray can continue to stay ahead or keep pace with HDDVD it will be more than okay. As more time goes by more space will be needed on media, and Bluray will continue to lower its price closer to HDDVD, eventually it will likely win out because of the need for that space. Unless another new formate arrives on the scene right away, but I doubt that. One thing is definite Sony needs to deliver on the price of the PS3 and more games asap.
