What you say is true. But people who are buying TVs now, at least where I work, are essentially 3 different customers.
1. Don't care, just want TV. I don't pay for TV, so why pay more for better picture. My old DVD player still works, why get a new one?
2. I want the best TV I can get, I love High Def, oh btw I am on a budget (have a wife).
3. I am rich bitch! Set me up with what eva, just so long as no one I know has a better set up!
As you can tell, group 2 and 3 want high def because picture matters. And in my opinion, group 2 and 3 dont make up the majority, BUT, they do make up a large chunk, and do make the stores the more money then just group 1.
Think of it this way. Monster Cable made new high speed HDMI. What is the difference? It transfers digital signals faster then regular HDMI cables. Not to mention they are Monster Cables so have the best isolation and rarest of metals coating the tips. And this makes about little to no difference on all but 1-2 TVs that only retailers that hold high end products (like where I work) would carry. And even with that, the difference is still little to none. But people still buy these cables because they require the best picture regardless of cost.
DVD is fine, DVD up conversion is cool. But there is more then just a slight difference in new movies like Transformers when it comes to True 1080p vs 480p upconverted. And with TV going High Def on all channels, people will not want to play DVDs when there are High Def movies on TV. Media players are expected to out preform what TV provides.
