If you are familiar with PC-DOS, DR-DOS, IBM OS/2, you wouldn't be so quick to say "no one bothered to compete with them in PC". Also "Lotus Notes" vs "Exchange" is a nice story of how Microsoft leverage their monopoly into other vertical. Also "Netscape" vs. "IE".
I do agree with you, that Microsoft doesn't have monopoly in console (now).
