I know. The whole point is I do not want to see it happen to the games industry.
Of course you always have a choice but most people don't even realise they have a choice. MS have made sure there is only one OS the masses know about. The same happens in other industries. I helped troubleshoot someone's broadband who thought there was only one provider in the country even though several large providers exist. The company was BT but don't get me started on them...that's another rant for another day.
Then you have interoperability

Why? No open standards. Further securing the monopoly. Competition in open source works just fine.
