Open source is NOT the majority of programs. We're talking about the majority of the industry, not a set of niche programs.
Oh and I do agree with you about being used to free online, I'm the same way (grew up with PC shooters). And to answer your online question, comparing MS and Nintendo (not familiar with Sony), Nintendo doesn't offer a tenth of what MS' service does. Also, given how incredibly popular Live is, Microsoft somehow knew that their consumers would be willing to pay for such a service, so it was a very smart business move (they're easily the leaders in console online).
