The reason people like Xbox Live is because it's an integrated service run completely by MSFT. Letting people run their own servers would just decrease the quality of the online experience. Yes you would have competition, but do people actually remember personal servers they played on? Most of the time I just end up on a crappy, laggy server someone set up.
I like the integrated workings of XBL, keeping track of meaningful stats and allowing you to accomplish achievements in a fair environment. There isn't any cheating.
