I don't see why this kind of changes should cause uproar. By removing "requiring disc in the drive" requirement, the new method is much less of a hassle. I usually only install 2 times the games I have, max. Once for home Desktop (default), second time for my laptop (only for games that are not graphics heavy). I don't have or know any friends that have more than 3 PC they use regularly.
