@welshbloke, I think it will be quite obvious when Nintendo (or Sony or MSFT) release a new generation, just like it is obvious from PS1 -> PS2 -> PS3, or XBOX -> X360, or N64 -> GCN -> Wii. Everyone consider PSOne as part of PS1 and PSTwo as part of PS2.
Headache come when analyzing portable. Nintendo itself (or is it famitsu ?) lump together GB and GBC. GBA, GBASP and GBA Micro are lumped together into GBA in US, but Japan tracker track GBA and GBA SP separatedly. DS and DSL are combined in US, but separated in Japan. PSP, PSP2000 and possibly PSP 3000 are combined together in US & Japan.
I think people will combine DS, DSL and DSi together into DS, just like Arcade+Pro+Elite combined into X360.
