@ixaarii,The game your thinking of is called MAG (Massive Action Game...likely a tentative name?)...it is, in my mind, the TRUE next-gen SOCOM as it is being created by Zipper.
Joe80 actually created the game listing when it was announced here.
@Joe80, i forgot the name but i think i saw a Sony game that went along those lines: with like 256 players each in squads it would effectively result in the same thing, with a high level commander controlling all the troops while the low level player playing basically a shooter
@ixaarii, I had those same thoughts and a game is actually coming out that does this, though not really MMO. I don't know how close it will be to our wishes, but its worth keeping an eye on. Stormrise.
this reminds me of an older dream of mine: back when starcraft was biiiig and i hadn't yet heard of MMOs i was dreaming how cool it would be to have a game in which some people play a game of Starcraft while others would be the footsoldiers in that fight... not exactly the same concept now that i think about it... random memory
Developers have been promising this for years, and it always turns out to be pure marketing-speak. Witness for example Novalogic's promised "immersive combat experience" with Armored Fist 3, Comanche 4, and Delta Force Land Warrior. Or the planned "immersive cross-game multiplayer" between Silent Hunter 2 and Destroyer Command - technically it did exist, but it was buggy and poorly done so it never caught on.
@necron101, this sounds brilliantly immersive (for those who want it), while maintaining a simple game/gameplay for those who don't... too bad it's done for a war theme... if it was done for a original universe... wooow
Ubisoft are looking into turning their five Tom Clancy series - Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Endwar and Hawx - into a "megagame". How's that going to work? Here's how. They'll do it in baby steps. For example, in the next Ghost Recon and the next Endwar, they're hoping the missions will be interwoven, a mission in Ghost Recon 3 being given context in the larger conflict by a mission in Endwar 2.
Although whispers were heard at E3 regarding the release date of the upcoming Ubisoft air combat title, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., Ubisoft hasn't released an official statement until today. Originally due out sometime in the Fall of this year, it was mentioned by the game's developer at this year's E3 that the game will most likely hit store shelves after the New Year.
