THQ has announced the acquisition of the Elephant Entertainment casual and online games business in conjunction with an exclusive, worldwide retail publishing agreement with Oberon Media. THQ plans to launch more than 20 new casual and online games on multiple platforms in 2008 under the Elephant Entertainment brand name.

THQ makes Dawn of War II official, coming Spring 2009

After numerous expansions to its Relic-founded Dawn of War license, THQ has officially announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II for the PC. While the game is not expected to drop until Spring 2009, THQ notes that players who pick up the current game's latest expansion, Soulstorm, will score themselves an invite to the sequel's upcoming multiplayer beta. It will be built upon the Relic's proprietary Essence Engine 2.0, and will feature a fully co-operative multiplayer campaign.

Publisher THQ has announced it will be bringing Age of Empires to the DS with Mythologies, promising 'epic strategy' with 'fast paced combat' three unique playable cultures in both single and multiplayer battle campaigns and "an immersive multiplayer experience with unique maps, customizable rules, a new skirmish mode and single-cart game sharing."

THQ revealed on Wednesday the sales performance of some its high profile games. Volition-developed Saints Row 2, released in October, has shipped 2.6 million to date, the firm said. In addition, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 shipped more than 4 million units to date; de Blob has shipped 700K; and Big Beach Sports has shipped 1.2 million.

THQ Closes Multiple Studios

THQ is making significant staff cuts to its internal development studios, with Paradigm Entertainment reportedly being closed (affecting the entire studio)and Juice Games seeing a workforce reduction of about a third. Los Angeles-area THQ studio Mass Media, Santa Clara, CA-based Locomotive Games and Seattle-based Sandblast Games are also closed. Phoenix, Arizona-based Rainbow Studios has seen unspecified amounts of layoffs.
