Nintendo's own Wii FAQ may inadvertently suggest that the system IS capable of playing CDs and DVDs. Interestingly, Nintendo clarifies that Wiis produced "in the end of 2006" do not have this ability. Will a future system update unlock this feature?

RE: Could CD and DVD playback be coming to the Wii?@koshbaby, I am interested in why people are still curious about this capability for the Wii...afterall, who still needs a CD player or DVD player at this point? Yes, you only need one machine under your TV in this case, but you would have to pop out the game you were playing and swap in the music or movie you want to play (not a huge hassle, I know).
But this certainly isn't the synergy on the level of a subsidized Blu-Ray player, which is becoming increasingly enticing with movies like 300 hitting the scene and 1080p HDTVs at budget levels.[ Guru ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 260 ]bids

You're totally right about the ubiquitousness of CD/DVD players in this day and age... adding DVD capabilities today is like adding a digital clock to your coffee maker - totally useless, but cheap and lets you add another bullet point to your list of features on the box.
However, I must say that Nintendo is very slow to add new features and channels so ANY improvements become newsworthy.
