I don't see any reason why Microsoft would care to do this. Adding a Blu-Ray player would either force them to jack up the console price (even as Sony continues to drop theirs) or eat the increased production costs.
Plus, while Sony uses Blu-Ray in the PS3 to muscle their format into the market, Microsoft wouldn't benefit at all from it.
I agree with you that MS is betting on digital distribution, which is one reason why their HDDVD support was so half-hearted. If the PS3 starts passing the 360, we'll see more of a focus on affordable downloads as opposed to a Blu-Ray 360.
