I agree, Maxis has managed to make the game accessible to people who havne't bothered with PC gaming in a while and have older machines. It will also run quite well on non-gaming laptops too.
Releasing the Creature Creator early is marketing genius. Even on a cynical site like Kotaku people are giddy over what they can do with even a gimped demo. I read that they might offer $5 off the full game if you purchase the Creator...and $5 isn't a bad deal for a couple months of play.
Of course, my creatures have so far turned out much like VGCats predicted...
