csinning, those are good points but I think that's become the common place excuse for people who can't afford good televisions. If this were say computers...nobody would ever say you can't tell the difference between running a game in 1280x720 and 1920x1080.
I think the reason the Ridge Racer shots look the same is that the game doesn't actually have 1920x1080 textures and is just blowing up the 1280x720 textures to a 1080p resolution. However, I still don't think that's enough. A low graphics game like World of Warcraft looks leaps and bounds better at 1920x1200 than 1280x720 (comparable resolutions).
This same thing is happening with people who claim there isn't much difference between DVD and Blu-Ray.
