When it comes to multiplayer FPS games, large-scale testing is proof - and where better to test the first proper from-the-ground-up teamplay multiplayer Quake FPS than QuakeCon, id Software's annual shindig in Dallas? That's certainly the view of id's cohorts Splash Damage, who not only brought the PC and 360 builds to the Con's vendor area, but also distributed Beta 2 among attendees on day one, ran a clan tournament on a range of new maps, and put on a series of advanced tactics seminars for budding fans.
Due for an early Australian & European release on September 28th, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has recently opened Beta 2 play. We made a beeline to FilePlanet as soon as we got word that Beta 2 was out, to find out what to expect in the final release of this lightning-speed, objective-focused FPS.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a prequel of sorts to Quake 2 and Quake 4, with the levels representing key historic battles in the future Strogg invasion of Earth.
Neil Postlethwaite of Splash Damage says it's not all bad:
ETQW will feature appropriate advertisements in select locations of our levels. The ads aren't intrusive and you won't have to interact with them; they'll just be part of the normal environment. In fact, there are some places it's quite odd not to have an advertisement - the sides of container trucks, for example. Great care is being taken to ensure that all our ads are appropriate for the game world and we have absolute approval rights in this area. If it's not appropriate or it's distracting, it won't go in.
The email gamestop sent me stated June 5th, I checked their website as a 3rd back up and it indicates July 2. I guess it will be early June or July, most likely.
