Atari Hires Ex-Sony BMG Exec as CEO

Atari has hired on Jim Wilson as CEO, as the publisher continues to work towards improving its financial position. Wilson most recently worked at Sony Wonder, Sony BMG's home entertainment business. But he also has served as president of Universal Interactive and as EVP/general manager of Worldwide Studios for Vivendi Universal Games after Vivendi's acquisition of the publisher.

Atari uses Steam for digital distribution

Valve announced today that Atari is offering many of its PC titles through the company's Steam digital distribution service. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and Indigo Prophecy among others are currently available. Although not currently available, Valve states that The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansion, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer, will be available soon. Atari Posts a Profit in Q1

Today, Atari announced its fiscal results: Profit of $3.5 million for the quarter (previously -11.9 million last year). Sales also increased significantly, $40.3 million (from $10.4 million). Atari's Alone in the Dark, which Infogrames said in its announcement shipped 1.2 million copies in the quarter, was a major contributor to Atari's turnaround.

Atari, which may now be described without hyperbole as dying publisher Atari, has revealed the existence of another $7.7 million loss, this time in its second quarter revenues. This new information brings the total number of Atari's divulged 2007 losses to almost $20 million, when combined with the $11.9 million Q1 loss revealed earlier this month.

Atari Confirms Alone In The Dark On PS2 And Wii

Officials from Atari have confirmed that forthcoming survival horror title Alone in the Dark will launch on Wii and PlayStation 2, as well as the previously announced Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC versions - although no release date has been confirmed for the franchise reboot.

Infogrames could change name to Atari

Infogrames CEO, David Gardner, tells GI.biz that the company may drop its name completely for the Atari marquee brand. He wants the company thought of as a "start-up" and the name change to represent the "final mark" of transformation. Directeur Général Délégué Phil Harrison chimes in that the company, as it stands now with a new management team less than a year old, is "absolutely a start-up" -- it's just a start-up with 25 years of history (and some serious financial drama).

Atari financials leak 2008/2009 line up

Atari has said that it plans to ship Alone in the Dark for PlayStation 3 during its 2008-2009 fiscal year, which begins in April and ends next March. The company's unaudited financial results for the nine months ended December 07 also reveal that a second Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion pack is due out in the same period.

Struggling Atari will soon have a new board, its parent company Infogrames said today. The overhaul is part of Infogrames' profitability plan for the publisher. Five Atari directors are expected to get the axe.

According to online reports, Atari has stepped in to publish both Ghostbusters: The Game and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - after Activision's decision not to carry the games following its merger with Vivendi Games.

Interplay and Atari settle dispute over D&D game rights

Late last month, in a notice filed with the US SEC, Interplay revealed that it has settled a long standing dispute with Atari. Under the terms of the agreement, Atari has agreed to purchase all rights that Interplay had on licensing games based on the Dungeons and Dragons franchise. In return, a previous agreement by Interplay to pay a promissory note of $1,050,000 to Atari was cancelled.
