Before its release, Mass Effect was anointed as a can't-miss prospect by practically anyone who saw or read about it. In theory, the package was tantalizing — a hybrid role-playing game with shooter elements, Oblivion-caliber exploration possibilities across a huge galaxy and one of the deepest stories ever crafted. There was also the concept of the player making gut-wrenching moral choices that would reverberate throughout the course of his or her journey.
