· Industry sales +35%. December NPD results will be released after the close on Thursday, 1/17. We expect industry software sales to rise 35% y/y, primarily driven by sales of top Nov titles: Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4, Assassin’s Creed, Halo 3, Rock Band, and Super Mario Galaxy. Channel checks and recent hardware updates at CES from MSFT (17.7mm 360 units worldwide LTD) and Sony point to strong retail trends. December data track sales from 12/2/07 to 1/5/07.

It's a "prediction", "forecast", whatever you'd like to call it. They are certainly prone to error, although they do have resources to communicate with industry partners and perform channel checks at upwards of 100 retail outlets.
The analysts provide it for the benefit of their institutional investors in this market (retailers, publishers, etc).
