My machine died with the RROD and the replacement although not a new chipset came with a very much quieter DVD unit and much quieter fans. It is not silent but it no longer impedes when watching movies even during the quiet moments.
So in answer to you points the Quieter units are already available and if you picked up the new model with the HDMI port I would imagine that it will be much better than the one you have seen to date. These very same units have also addressed the RROD failure rates.
The only thing worth waiting for now if buying new is the smaller chips and unless that comes with a smaller house brick for power that probably is not worth the wait.
As for Just_Ben I personally would not buy a Wii because it provides nothing to me that my PC and 360 combi does not do. I did my Mario thing in the 80s and to be honest I am gobsmacked that anyone bar a few reliving their youth would care much for this console but then I guess not everyone is an ageing gamer like myself.
